Cool mornings and rainy weather often mean climbing into your Subaru and finding the inside of the windshield covered in fog. It can make it difficult to see traffic, pedestrians, and lane markings. Here is why it happens, how to clear it, and when the problem deserves an inspection.
Why does the inside of the windshield fog up?
Moisture inside the vehicle collects on cooler glass. Passengers breathing, wet jackets, damp floor mats, umbrellas, and rain brought into the car can all add moisture to the cabin. Leaving the climate-control system on recirculation for too long can make fogging worse because it keeps circulating the humid air already inside.
How to clear the glass
1. Press the front defroster button
Select the windshield defrost or defog setting. On many Subaru models, it directs air toward the windshield and front side windows and turns on the air conditioner to help remove moisture. It can do this even when you choose a warm temperature.
2. Use fresh air
Switch from recirculated air to outside air. Subaru advises against remaining in recirculation mode for an extended period when windshield fogging is a concern.
3. Set a comfortable warm temperature and increase the fan
Warm airflow directed at the windshield helps clear the inside of the glass. If the windows are heavily fogged, increase the fan speed. Make sure you can see clearly through the windshield and side windows before driving. If visibility becomes limited on the road, pull over somewhere safe until the glass clears.
4. Turn on the rear defogger if needed
The rear defogger clears the rear glass. Depending on the vehicle, the same button may also turn on heated mirrors. Avoid scraping the thin heating lines inside the rear window.
What if the fog is on the outside?
Sometimes humid outside air collects on a windshield cooled by the air conditioner. Use the wipers to check which side is fogged. If the moisture is outside, raise the cabin temperature slightly or reduce the cold air directed at the glass.
How can you reduce fogging next time?
- Clean the inside of the windshield so film does not make the glass harder to see through.
- Remove wet jackets, towels, and umbrellas rather than leaving them in the car overnight.
- Dry damp floor mats and check for water collecting underneath.
- Use fresh-air mode during cool or rainy weather when recirculation causes fogging.
When should the defroster be inspected?
Schedule an inspection if little air reaches the windshield vents, the fan works only at certain speeds, the glass repeatedly fogs even with the defroster and fresh air selected, or the carpet stays damp. A technician can check the airflow, climate-control system, and possible sources of moisture to find the cause.
Whether your family drives a Subaru Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, or Ascent, clear glass matters on every trip. The same advice applies to the Toyota or Honda you rely on.
